Each year, over 300 million cows endure inhumane treatment, confined in cramped, unnatural conditions before meeting an untimely end. Millions of cows are facing a brutal fate in industrial slaughterhouses and their lives reduced to mere numbers.
At Befriend Cows, we’re on a mission to change this reality by fostering deep human-animal connections that inspire kindness and spark change. Through sanctuary partnerships, educational outreach, and innovative technology, we’re building a world where cows are cherished, not commodified. Join us in this movement of spreading compassion and kindness in this world.
Every year, approximately 300 million cows are slaughtered globally for beef and dairy production, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This staggering number reflects the scale of industrial farming, where cows are often treated as mere commodities. Animal welfare reports, such as those from the Animal Welfare Institute, highlight the grim conditions these animals endure.
In concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), overcrowding is rampant, with cows confined to spaces so tight they can barely move, denying them natural behaviors like grazing or socializing. The lack of care is evident in routine practices like tail docking or dehorning without anesthesia, causing chronic pain and distress.
The emotional toll on cows is profound; as sentient beings, they experience fear and suffering in these environments. Industrial farming also drives significant environmental harm, contributing to 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with cattle responsible for about two-thirds of this due to methane from enteric fermentation and manure.
Deforestation for pastureland, destroys vital ecosystems, releasing stored carbon and threatening biodiversity. Resource depletion is another issue, with beef production requiring vast amounts of water, up to 15,000 liters per kilogram of meat, and land, with 60% of global agricultural land used for cattle.
At Befriend Cows, we advocate for ethical treatment through sanctuary partnerships, where rescued cows receive love and care, showing a kinder way forward. Every year, billions of cows face a grim fate in industrial farms. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Our sanctuary partners show cows the love they deserve.
Cows are far more than livestock, they’re sentient beings capable of feeling joy, fear, and affection. Research, like studies from the University of British Columbia, shows cows form strong social bonds, recognize familiar faces, and even display optimism in positive environments.
A visitor to one of our sanctuaries once shared how a rescued cow, Daisy, gently nuzzled her hand, transforming her view of these animals from distant creatures to loving companions. This emotional intelligence underscores why cows deserve our compassion.
Ecologically, when treated ethically, cows can contribute to sustainable farming. Through regenerative grazing, they enhance soil health, sequester carbon, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, as seen in practices promoted by organizations like the World Wildlife Fund. Cows aren’t just animals, they’re friends who feel deeply. At our sanctuaries, kids light up when a cow nuzzles them. That’s the kindness we’re fighting for.
Befriend Cows is building a compassionate world through impactful programs.
Cows are more than just animals, they’re sentient souls who teach us the power of kindness and connection. In a world where millions face the harsh reality of mass slaughter, Befriend Cows is a beacon of hope, fostering human-animal bonds through sanctuary partnerships, educational outreach, and innovative technology.
From the joy of a child’s laugh during a cow’s gentle nuzzle to the promise of a sustainable future with ethical farming, we’re building a movement grounded in compassion.
